Jean Belmondo and Anna Karina in Pierrot Le Fou
SKPOST — "Some days are like that. Everyone you meet is an imbecile. So you start looking in the mirror and wondering about yourself." Pierrot said this to Marianne as his justification for returning home early and alone. So early into this film, Pierrot gives us one of the most essential statements in this film, and it goes over the heads of many. I do not doubt that they do not understand the statement, but they fail to comprehend how this results in the adventure of Pierrot and Marianne. I am writing this to discuss Pierrot Le Fou, discuss the idea of this quote, and discuss film and Jean-Luc Godard in general.
I came home yesterday amidst pretty emptying thought. Thought that really makes you question yourself, but concerns to a point where you can not answer your own questions because it has effectively managed to drain what is in you, to the point where you do not know what to think. It is thought that often strengthens a resolve to get away from the world as it is, and thought that creates a desire to fill it just for a moment at least. Because I could not stand to try to sleep, I decided to rewatch Pierrot Le Fou for the fourth time—a decision that I do not regret.
After rewatching this film and reading some reviews, I could not help but think about how I had an instant attachment to this movie. I first watched Pierrot Le Fou on April 20, 2021. I happened to find it during my initial impulse to learn more about film. During this first impulse, I came across the French New Wave film movement which sought to use experimental techniques to extend the range of film as a tool for storytelling and expression.
